Does Americas Gold and Silver (TSE:USA) Have A Healthy Balance Sheet?
The external fund manager backed by Berkshire Hathaway's Charlie Munger, Li Lu, makes no bones about it when he says 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. As with many other companies Americas Gold and Silver Corporation (TSE:USA) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. If things get really bad, the lenders can take control of the business. However, a more usual (but still expensive) situation is where a company must dilute shareholders at a cheap share price simply to get debt under control. Of course, plenty of companies use debt to fund growth, without any negative consequences. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.
How Much Debt Does Americas Gold and Silver Carry?
The chart below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Americas Gold and Silver had US$22.3m in debt in December 2024; about the same as the year before. However, it also had US$20.0m in cash, and so its net debt is US$2.34m.
A Look At Americas Gold and Silver's Liabilities
The latest balance sheet data shows that Americas Gold and Silver had liabilities of US$69.4m due within a year, and liabilities of US$69.8m falling due after that. On the other hand, it had cash of US$20.0m and US$7.13m worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by US$112.1m.
While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Americas Gold and Silver has a market capitalization of US$323.3m, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. However, it is still worthwhile taking a close look at its ability to pay off debt. Carrying virtually no net debt, Americas Gold and Silver has a very light debt load indeed. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine Americas Gold and Silver's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.
View our latest analysis for Americas Gold and Silver
Over 12 months, Americas Gold and Silver reported revenue of US$100m, which is a gain of 12%, although it did not report any earnings before interest and tax. That rate of growth is a bit slow for our taste, but it takes all types to make a world.
Caveat Emptor
Importantly, Americas Gold and Silver had an earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss over the last year. Indeed, it lost US$26m at the EBIT level. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above does not give us much confidence that company should be using so much debt. So we think its balance sheet is a little strained, though not beyond repair. However, it doesn't help that it burned through US$22m of cash over the last year. So suffice it to say we consider the stock very risky. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But ultimately, every company can contain risks that exist outside of the balance sheet. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Americas Gold and Silver (including 1 which is a bit unpleasant) .
