The Return Trends At Orla Mining (TSE:OLA) Look Promising

What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. With that in mind, we've noticed some promising trends at Orla Mining (TSE:OLA) so let's look a bit deeper.

Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)

If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Orla Mining, this is the formula:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.12 = US$176m ÷ (US$1.8b - US$334m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2025).

So, Orla Mining has an ROCE of 12%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 4.6% generated by the Metals and Mining industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us

We're delighted to see that Orla Mining is reaping rewards from its investments and is now generating some pre-tax profits. Shareholders would no doubt be pleased with this because the business was loss-making five years ago but is is now generating 12% on its capital. And unsurprisingly, like most companies trying to break into the black, Orla Mining is utilizing 1,024% more capital than it was five years ago. This can tell us that the company has plenty of reinvestment opportunities that are able to generate higher returns.

For the record though, there was a noticeable increase in the company's current liabilities over the period, so we would attribute some of the ROCE growth to that. Essentially the business now has suppliers or short-term creditors funding about 18% of its operations, which isn't ideal. It's worth keeping an eye on this because as the percentage of current liabilities to total assets increases, some aspects of risk also increase.

The Bottom Line On Orla Mining's ROCE

In summary, it's great to see that Orla Mining has managed to break into profitability and is continuing to reinvest in its business. Since the stock has returned a staggering 212% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.

On a final note, we've found 2 warning signs for Orla Mining that we think you should be aware of.
