We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell Orla Mining Ltd. (TSE:OLA), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Orla Mining
Pierre Lassonde made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for CA$3.5m worth of shares at a price of CA$1.75 each. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. That purchase may suggest an expectation of positive returns over the long term.
Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 2.98m shares worth CA$4.9m. In total, Orla Mining insiders bought more than they sold over the last year. They paid about CA$1.66 on average. I'd consider this a positive as it suggests insiders see value at around the current price, which is CA$1.07. You can see the insider transactions over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insider Ownership of Orla Mining
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Orla Mining insiders own about CA$35m worth of shares (which is 18% of the company). This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
So What Do The Orla Mining Insider Transactions Indicate?
It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Orla Mining shares in the last quarter. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. Insiders own shares in Orla Mining and we see no evidence to suggest they are worried about the future. If you are like me, you may want to think about whether this company will grow or shrink.
