There wouldn't be many who think New Gold Inc.'s (TSE:NGD) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.6x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Metals and Mining industry in Canada is similar at about 2.9x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

What Does New Gold's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, New Gold has been relatively sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to lift, which has kept the P/S from declining. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/S?

New Gold's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 15%. Revenue has also lifted 16% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 36% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 26% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we find it interesting that New Gold is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Bottom Line On New Gold's P/S

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Looking at New Gold's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.
