K92 Mining's (TSE:KNT) five-year earnings growth trails the enviable shareholder returns

Simply Wall St

Buying shares in the best businesses can build meaningful wealth for you and your family. And highest quality companies can see their share prices grow by huge amounts. To wit, the K92 Mining Inc. (TSE:KNT) share price has soared 317% over five years. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. On top of that, the share price is up 39% in about a quarter.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, K92 Mining managed to grow its earnings per share at 37% a year. So the EPS growth rate is rather close to the annualized share price gain of 33% per year. Therefore one could conclude that sentiment towards the shares hasn't morphed very much. In fact, the share price seems to largely reflect the EPS growth.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that K92 Mining shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 109% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 33% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity.
