IAMGOLD (TSE:IMG) Is Doing The Right Things To Multiply Its Share Price
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. Speaking of which, we noticed some great changes in IAMGOLD's (TSE:IMG) returns on capital, so let's have a look.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. To calculate this metric for IAMGOLD, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.098 = US$473m ÷ (US$5.4b - US$551m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
Therefore, IAMGOLD has an ROCE of 9.8%. In absolute terms, that's a low return, but it's much better than the Metals and Mining industry average of 3.9%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For IAMGOLD Tell Us?
The fact that IAMGOLD is now generating some pre-tax profits from its prior investments is very encouraging. About five years ago the company was generating losses but things have turned around because it's now earning 9.8% on its capital. In addition to that, IAMGOLD is employing 34% more capital than previously which is expected of a company that's trying to break into profitability. We like this trend, because it tells us the company has profitable reinvestment opportunities available to it, and if it continues going forward that can lead to a multi-bagger performance.
In Conclusion...
In summary, it's great to see that IAMGOLD has managed to break into profitability and is continuing to reinvest in its business. And with the stock having performed exceptionally well over the last five years, these patterns are being accounted for by investors. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
