IAMGOLD Corporation (TSE:IMG) Looks Just Right With A 27% Price Jump
IAMGOLD Corporation (TSE:IMG) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The annual gain comes to 171% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.
After such a large jump in price, IAMGOLD may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 24.3x, since almost half of all companies in Canada have P/E ratios under 16x and even P/E's lower than 8x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, IAMGOLD's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is IAMGOLD's Growth Trending?
IAMGOLD's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 57%. At least EPS has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the five analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 37% per year over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 11% per annum, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that IAMGOLD's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
IAMGOLD's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of IAMGOLD's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a lower P/E ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
