Imperial Metals Corporation (TSE:III) Stock Catapults 30% Though Its Price And Business Still Lag The Industry

Imperial Metals Corporation (TSE:III) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 30% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 34%.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, Imperial Metals may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Canada have P/S ratios greater than 3.4x and even P/S higher than 26x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

How Has Imperial Metals Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, Imperial Metals has been doing very well. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this strong revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Imperial Metals' to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 44%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 270% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 74% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this in consideration, it's easy to understand why Imperial Metals' P/S falls short of the mark set by its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting to see the recent limited growth rates continue into the future and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

What Does Imperial Metals' P/S Mean For Investors?

Imperial Metals' recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

In line with expectations, Imperial Metals maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider industry forecast. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
