For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Franco-Nevada (TSE:FNV). Even if this company is fairly valued by the market, investors would agree that generating consistent profits will continue to provide Franco-Nevada with the means to add long-term value to shareholders.

Franco-Nevada's Improving Profits
Franco-Nevada has undergone a massive growth in earnings per share over the last three years. So much so that this three year growth rate wouldn't be a fair assessment of the company's future. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Franco-Nevada's EPS has risen over the last 12 months, growing from US$3.55 to US$4.00. This amounts to a 13% gain; a figure that shareholders will be pleased to see.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Franco-Nevada shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 63% to 68%, and revenue is growing. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in our book.

The trick, as an investor, is to find companies that are going to perform well in the future, not just in the past. While crystal balls don't exist, you can check our visualization of consensus analyst forecasts for Franco-Nevada's future EPS 100% free.
Are Franco-Nevada Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since Franco-Nevada has a market capitalisation of CA$30b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we do take comfort from the fact that they are investors in the company. We note that their impressive stake in the company is worth US$210m. This comes in at 0.7% of shares in the company, which is a fair amount of a business of this size. So despite their percentage holding being low, company management still have plenty of reasons to deliver the best outcomes for investors.
While it's always good to see some strong conviction in the company from insiders through heavy investment, it's also important for shareholders to ask if management compensation policies are reasonable. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalisations over US$8.0b, like Franco-Nevada, the median CEO pay is around US$8.3m.
Franco-Nevada's CEO took home a total compensation package of US$3.8m in the year prior to December 2021. First impressions seem to indicate a compensation policy that is favourable to shareholders. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Is Franco-Nevada Worth Keeping An Eye On?
One important encouraging feature of Franco-Nevada is that it is growing profits. Earnings growth might be the main attraction for Franco-Nevada, but the fun does not stop there. Boasting both modest CEO pay and considerable insider ownership, you'd argue this one is worthy of the watchlist, at least. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Franco-Nevada has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
There's always the possibility of doing well buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But for those who consider these important metrics, we encourage you to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
