Vital Energy Inc. (CVE:VUX) Stock's 26% Dive Might Signal An Opportunity But It Requires Some Scrutiny
Vital Energy Inc. (CVE:VUX) shareholders won't be pleased to see that the share price has had a very rough month, dropping 26% and undoing the prior period's positive performance. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 23% in that time.
After such a large drop in price, Vital Energy's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.1x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the Oil and Gas industry in Canada, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 2.1x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

How Vital Energy Has Been Performing
Vital Energy certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing its revenue at a really rapid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dwindle, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Vital Energy's earnings, revenue and cash flow. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?
Vital Energy's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 40% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 164% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 1.1% shows it's noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Vital Energy's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.
The Bottom Line On Vital Energy's P/S
Vital Energy's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We're very surprised to see Vital Energy currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. Potential investors that are sceptical over continued revenue performance may be preventing the P/S ratio from matching previous strong performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
