Vermilion Energy (TSE:VET) Is Due To Pay A Dividend Of CA$0.10

Vermilion Energy Inc. (TSE:VET) has announced that it will pay a dividend of CA$0.10 per share on the 15th of January. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 2.7%.

While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Vermilion Energy's stock price has reduced by 30% in the last 3 months, which is not ideal for investors and can explain a sharp increase in the dividend yield.

Vermilion Energy's Earnings Easily Cover The Distributions

While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. However, prior to this announcement, Vermilion Energy's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

EPS is set to fall by 70.4% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, we estimate the payout ratio could be 20%, which is comfortable for the company to continue in the future.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was CA$2.40 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was CA$0.40. The dividend has fallen 83% over that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the track record hasn't been stellar, we really want to see earnings per share growing over time. Vermilion Energy has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 40% per annum. Earnings have been growing rapidly, and with a low payout ratio we think that the company could turn out to be a great dividend stock.

Vermilion Energy Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that Vermilion Energy is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. The company is generating plenty of cash, and the earnings also quite easily cover the distributions. However, it is worth noting that the earnings are expected to fall over the next year, which may not change the long term outlook, but could affect the dividend payment in the next 12 months. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. To that end, Vermilion Energy has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about. Is Vermilion Energy not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
