Possible Bearish Signals With Precision Drilling Insiders Disposing Stock

Quite a few Precision Drilling Corporation (TSE:PD) insiders sold their shares over the past year, which may be a cause for concern. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Precision Drilling

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Chief Financial Officer, Carey Ford, sold CA$397k worth of shares at a price of CA$77.79 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is CA$63.49. So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Insider Ownership

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Precision Drilling insiders own about CA$38m worth of shares. That equates to 4.4% of the company. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Precision Drilling Tell Us?

It doesn't really mean much that no insider has traded Precision Drilling shares in the last quarter. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Precision Drilling insiders. The modest level of insider ownership is, at least, some comfort. So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
