ARC Resources (TSE:ARX) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To CA$0.12
ARC Resources Ltd.'s (TSE:ARX) dividend will be increasing to CA$0.12 on 15th of July. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 2.2%.

ARC Resources' Earnings Easily Cover the Distributions
Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. Prior to this announcement, ARC Resources' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 166.0%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 15%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The first annual payment during the last 10 years was CA$1.20 in 2012, and the most recent fiscal year payment was CA$0.48. The dividend has shrunk at around 8.8% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. Unfortunately, ARC Resources' earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year.
Our Thoughts On ARC Resources' Dividend
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
