Need To Know: goeasy Ltd. (TSE:GSY) Insiders Have Been Selling Shares
We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So before you buy or sell goeasy Ltd. (TSE:GSY), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
What Is Insider Selling?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

goeasy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive Chairman, David Ingram, for CA$3.4m worth of shares, at about CA$45.12 per share. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of CA$51.91, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling on market, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 11.4% of David Ingram's holding.
Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid CA$3.7m for 91945 shares. But insiders sold 228k shares worth CA$10m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of goeasy shares, than buying. You can see the insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Insiders at goeasy Have Sold Stock Recently

Does goeasy Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. goeasy insiders own about CA$202m worth of shares (which is 27% of the company). Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
So What Does This Data Suggest About goeasy Insiders?
Insiders sold goeasy shares recently, but they didn't buy any. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. But since goeasy is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. It is good to see high insider ownership, but the insider selling leaves us cautious.
