The Guardian Capital Group (TSE:GCG.A) Share Price Has Gained 76% And Shareholders Are Hoping For More
Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. For example, long term Guardian Capital Group Limited (TSE:GCG.A) shareholders have enjoyed a 76% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 43% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the more recent gains haven't been so impressive, with shareholders gaining just 3.7% , including dividends .

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Guardian Capital Group's earnings per share are down 21% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years. The impact of extraordinary items on earnings, in the last year, partially explain the diversion.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
On the other hand, Guardian Capital Group's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 8.8% over the last five years. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Guardian Capital Group the TSR over the last 5 years was 96%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Guardian Capital Group shareholders are up 3.7% for the year (even including dividends). But that was short of the market average. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 14% per year for five years. Maybe the share price is just taking a breather while the business executes on its growth strategy. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Guardian Capital Group has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is potentially serious) we think you should know about.
