Should You Be Adding GDI Integrated Facility Services (TSE:GDI) To Your Watchlist Today?
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like GDI Integrated Facility Services (TSE:GDI). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

GDI Integrated Facility Services's Improving Profits
Over the last three years, GDI Integrated Facility Services has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like a firecracker arcing through the night sky, GDI Integrated Facility Services's EPS shot from CA$0.98 to CA$2.49, over the last year. Year on year growth of 154% is certainly a sight to behold.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). GDI Integrated Facility Services shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 4.0% to 6.1%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Are GDI Integrated Facility Services Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. So it is good to see that GDI Integrated Facility Services insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth CA$170m. That equates to 14% of the company, making insiders powerful and aligned with other shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.
Does GDI Integrated Facility Services Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
GDI Integrated Facility Services's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That EPS growth certainly has my attention, and the large insider ownership only serves to further stoke my interest. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So yes, on this short analysis I do think it's worth considering GDI Integrated Facility Services for a spot on your watchlist. You still need to take note of risks, for example - GDI Integrated Facility Services has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
