Magellan Aerospace (TSE:MAL) Shareholders Have Enjoyed A 83% Share Price Gain
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Magellan Aerospace Corporation (TSE:MAL) share price is up 83% in the last year, clearly besting the market return of around 54% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. Unfortunately the longer term returns are not so good, with the stock falling 44% in the last three years.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the last twelve months, Magellan Aerospace actually shrank its EPS by 95%.
So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Indeed, when EPS is declining but the share price is up, it often means the market is considering other factors.
Unfortunately Magellan Aerospace's fell 27% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Magellan Aerospace's TSR for the last year was 94%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Magellan Aerospace has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 94% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 3% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
