The past three years for Bank of Nova Scotia (TSE:BNS) investors has not been profitable
For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. We regret to report that long term The Bank of Nova Scotia (TSE:BNS) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 21% in three years, versus a market return of about 23%.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Bank of Nova Scotia saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 8.5% per year, over the last three years. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 8% per year. So it seems like sentiment towards the stock hasn't changed all that much over time. Rather, the share price has approximately tracked EPS growth.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Bank of Nova Scotia the TSR over the last 3 years was -5.6%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
Bank of Nova Scotia shareholders have received returns of 20% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 6% per year. It is possible that management foresight will bring growth well into the future, even if the share price slows down.
