Investors more bullish on Eneva (BVMF:ENEV3) this week as stock lifts 3.1%, despite earnings trending downwards over past five years

Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. For example, long term Eneva S.A. (BVMF:ENEV3) shareholders have enjoyed a 99% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 1.5% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 18% in the last year.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During five years of share price growth, Eneva actually saw its EPS drop 8.8% per year.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

On the other hand, Eneva's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 28% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Eneva shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 18% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 15% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Eneva better, we need to consider many other factors.
