Some Investors May Be Worried About CCR's (BVMF:CCRO3) Returns On Capital
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. Although, when we looked at CCR (BVMF:CCRO3), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for CCR, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = R$3.7b ÷ (R$41b - R$5.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2021).
So, CCR has an ROCE of 11%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Infrastructure industry average of 9.9%.

So How Is CCR's ROCE Trending?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at CCR doesn't inspire confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 23%, but since then they've fallen to 11%. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a side note, CCR has done well to pay down its current liabilities to 14% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.
What We Can Learn From CCR's ROCE
While returns have fallen for CCR in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. These growth trends haven't led to growth returns though, since the stock has fallen 19% over the last five years. So we think it'd be worthwhile to look further into this stock given the trends look encouraging.
