When close to half the companies in Brazil have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 10x, you may consider CCR S.A. (BVMF:CCRO3) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 19.4x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.

With earnings growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, CCR has been relatively sluggish. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this lacklustre earnings performance will improve markedly. If not, then existing shareholders may be very nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is CCR's Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, CCR would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.9% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 106% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 24% each year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 18% per year, which is noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why CCR is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Bottom Line On CCR's P/E

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of CCR's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook is contributing to its high P/E. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
