Telefônica Brasil S.A.'s (BVMF:VIVT3) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to R$0.3355 on 30th of April. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 3.4%.

Telefônica Brasil's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Even a low dividend yield can be attractive if it is sustained for years on end. The last dividend was quite easily covered by Telefônica Brasil's earnings. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 62.4%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 47% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2014, the annual payment back then was R$3.36, compared to the most recent full-year payment of R$1.66. The dividend has shrunk at around 6.8% a year during that period. Declining dividends isn't generally what we look for as they can indicate that the company is running into some challenges.

Dividend Growth Potential Is Shaky

Given that the track record hasn't been stellar, we really want to see earnings per share growing over time. Telefônica Brasil's earnings per share has shrunk at 11% a year over the past five years. This steep decline can indicate that the business is going through a tough time, which could constrain its ability to pay a larger dividend each year in the future. It's not all bad news though, as the earnings are predicted to rise over the next 12 months - we would just be a bit cautious until this becomes a long term trend.

Our Thoughts On Telefônica Brasil's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
