C&A Modas S.A. (BVMF:CEAB3) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 93%.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that C&A Modas' price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in Brazil, seeing as it matches the P/S ratio of the wider industry. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has C&A Modas Performed Recently?

C&A Modas certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is moderate because investors think this strong revenue performance might be about to tail off. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

How Is C&A Modas' Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, C&A Modas would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 14% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 49% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenues over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 9.6% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 3.5% per annum growth forecast for the broader industry.

In light of this, it's curious that C&A Modas' P/S sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors aren't convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Bottom Line On C&A Modas' P/S

Its shares have lifted substantially and now C&A Modas' P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Looking at C&A Modas' analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. There could be some risks that the market is pricing in, which is preventing the P/S ratio from matching the positive outlook. This uncertainty seems to be reflected in the share price which, while stable, could be higher given the revenue forecasts.
