JHSF Participações (BVMF:JHSF3) Has Rewarded Shareholders With An Exceptional 580% Total Return On Their Investment
We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. To wit, the JHSF Participações S.A. (BVMF:JHSF3) share price has soared 530% over five years. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. On top of that, the share price is up 17% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 9.8% in 90 days).
It really delights us to see such great share price performance for investors.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the five years of share price growth, JHSF Participações moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
It is of course excellent to see how JHSF Participações has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.
What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between JHSF Participações' total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Dividends have been really beneficial for JHSF Participações shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 580%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that JHSF Participações has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 34% in the last twelve months. However, that falls short of the 47% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand JHSF Participações better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that JHSF Participações is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 2 of those shouldn't be ignored...
