There Are Reasons To Feel Uneasy About CSN Mineração's (BVMF:CMIN3) Returns On Capital
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at CSN Mineração (BVMF:CMIN3), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for CSN Mineração, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.16 = R$4.3b ÷ (R$36b - R$9.5b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2025).
So, CSN Mineração has an ROCE of 16%. In absolute terms, that's a satisfactory return, but compared to the Metals and Mining industry average of 7.5% it's much better.

What Does the ROCE Trend For CSN Mineração Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at CSN Mineração, we didn't gain much confidence. Around five years ago the returns on capital were 36%, but since then they've fallen to 16%. However it looks like CSN Mineração might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.
The Bottom Line On CSN Mineração's ROCE
In summary, CSN Mineração is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Yet to long term shareholders the stock has gifted them an incredible 126% return in the last three years, so the market appears to be rosy about its future. However, unless these underlying trends turn more positive, we wouldn't get our hopes up too high.
