Azzas 2154's (BVMF:AZZA3) earnings have declined over three years, contributing to shareholders 56% loss
Over the last month the Azzas 2154 S.A. (BVMF:AZZA3) has been much stronger than before, rebounding by 33%. But that is small recompense for the exasperating returns over three years. Tragically, the share price declined 59% in that time. So it is really good to see an improvement. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.
While the last three years has been tough for Azzas 2154 shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.
Our free stock report includes 5 warning signs investors should be aware of before investing in Azzas 2154. Read for free now.In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During the three years that the share price fell, Azzas 2154's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 22% each year. This fall in EPS isn't far from the rate of share price decline, which was 26% per year. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. In this case, it seems that the EPS is guiding the share price.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Azzas 2154's TSR for the last 3 years was -56%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 4.3% in the last year, Azzas 2154 shareholders lost 35% (even including dividends). Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 2% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Azzas 2154 better, we need to consider many other factors.
