PBG (BVMF:PTBL3) Has Compensated Shareholders With A Respectable 89% Return On Their Investment
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. But PBG S.A. (BVMF:PTBL3) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 64% over five years, which is below the market return. Looking at the last year alone, the stock is up 9.8%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
During five years of share price growth, PBG actually saw its EPS drop 9.7% per year.
Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.
We are not particularly impressed by the annual compound revenue growth of 1.4% over five years. So why is the share price up? It's not immediately obvious to us, but a closer look at the company's progress over time might yield answers.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
Investors should note that there's a difference between PBG's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. PBG's TSR of 89% for the 5 years exceeded its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that PBG shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 11% over the last year. However, that falls short of the 14% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 4 warning signs for PBG (1 is significant) that you should be aware of.
