Crescent NV's (EBR:OPTI) Share Price Matching Investor Opinion

When you see that almost half of the companies in the Communications industry in Belgium have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1.1x, Crescent NV (EBR:OPTI) looks to be giving off some sell signals with its 2.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/S.

How Has Crescent Performed Recently?

Recent times haven't been great for Crescent as its revenue has been falling quicker than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Crescent?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as high as Crescent's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 27%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 36% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 77% as estimated by the one analyst watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 3.0% growth forecast for the broader industry.

With this information, we can see why Crescent is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Crescent's P/S?

It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Crescent's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook is contributing to its high P/S. It appears that shareholders are confident in the company's future revenues, which is propping up the P/S. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Crescent (at least 2 which don't sit too well with us), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
