Does Home Invest Belgium's (EBR:HOMI) Share Price Gain of 28% Match Its Business Performance?
One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But if you choose individual stocks with prowess, you can make superior returns. For example, the Home Invest Belgium S.A. (EBR:HOMI) share price is up 28% in the last three years, clearly besting the market decline of around 18% (not including dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 4.1% in the last year , including dividends .

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During three years of share price growth, Home Invest Belgium achieved compound earnings per share growth of 17% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 8% average annual increase in the share price. So one could reasonably conclude that the market has cooled on the stock.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Home Invest Belgium the TSR over the last 3 years was 40%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Home Invest Belgium has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 4.1% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 8% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 4 warning signs for Home Invest Belgium (of which 1 is significant!) you should know about.
