Aurizon Holdings (ASX:AZJ) Has Some Way To Go To Become A Multi-Bagger
To find a multi-bagger stock, what are the underlying trends we should look for in a business? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Ultimately, this demonstrates that it's a business that is reinvesting profits at increasing rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Aurizon Holdings (ASX:AZJ) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on Aurizon Holdings is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.11 = AU$929m ÷ (AU$9.6b - AU$790m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).
Thus, Aurizon Holdings has an ROCE of 11%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 7.2% generated by the Transportation industry.

So How Is Aurizon Holdings' ROCE Trending?
Things have been pretty stable at Aurizon Holdings, with its capital employed and returns on that capital staying somewhat the same for the last five years. Businesses with these traits tend to be mature and steady operations because they're past the growth phase. So don't be surprised if Aurizon Holdings doesn't end up being a multi-bagger in a few years time. That being the case, it makes sense that Aurizon Holdings has been paying out 95% of its earnings to its shareholders. If the company is in fact lacking growth opportunities, that's one of the viable alternatives for the money.
What We Can Learn From Aurizon Holdings' ROCE
In summary, Aurizon Holdings isn't compounding its earnings but is generating stable returns on the same amount of capital employed. Unsurprisingly then, the total return to shareholders over the last five years has been flat. All in all, the inherent trends aren't typical of multi-baggers, so if that's what you're after, we think you might have more luck elsewhere.
