Audinate Group Limited (ASX:AD8) May Have Run Too Fast Too Soon With Recent 46% Price Plummet
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the Audinate Group Limited (ASX:AD8) share price has dived 46% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 13% in that time.
Even after such a large drop in price, when almost half of the companies in Australia's Electronic industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, you may still consider Audinate Group as a stock not worth researching with its 8.2x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Audinate Group's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times have been advantageous for Audinate Group as its revenues have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems the market expects this form will continue into the future, hence the elevated P/S ratio. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.
Keen to find out how analysts think Audinate Group's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start. What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The High P/S?
In order to justify its P/S ratio, Audinate Group would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 50%. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 189% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 21% each year as estimated by the eight analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 29% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it concerning that Audinate Group is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
What Does Audinate Group's P/S Mean For Investors?
Audinate Group's shares may have suffered, but its P/S remains high. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
It comes as a surprise to see Audinate Group trade at such a high P/S given the revenue forecasts look less than stellar. Right now we aren't comfortable with the high P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
