Don't Ignore The Insider Selling In JB Hi-Fi

We wouldn't blame JB Hi-Fi Limited (ASX:JBH) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Terry Smart, the Group CEO & Executive Director recently netted about AU$2.7m selling shares at an average price of AU$119. That's a big disposal, and it decreased their holding size by 11%, which is notable but not too bad.

JB Hi-Fi Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In fact, the recent sale by Terry Smart was the biggest sale of JB Hi-Fi shares made by an insider individual in the last twelve months, according to our records. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of AU$115. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.

Terry Smart ditched 29.30k shares over the year. The average price per share was AU$111. Does JB Hi-Fi Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 0.4% of JB Hi-Fi shares, worth about AU$46m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The JB Hi-Fi Insider Transactions Indicate?

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. Despite some insider buying, the longer term picture doesn't make us feel much more positive. But since JB Hi-Fi is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We're in no rush to buy! So these insider transactions can help us build a thesis about the stock, but it's also worthwhile knowing the risks facing this company.
