The AuMake Limited (ASX:AUK) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 33%. Longer-term shareholders will rue the drop in the share price, since it's now virtually flat for the year after a promising few quarters.

Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about AuMake's P/S ratio of 0.5x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Specialty Retail industry in Australia is also close to 0.8x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has AuMake Performed Recently?

Recent times have been quite advantageous for AuMake as its revenue has been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to wane, which has kept the share price, and thus the P/S ratio, from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for AuMake, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is AuMake's Revenue Growth Trending?

AuMake's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, we see the company's revenues grew exponentially. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 100% overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 7.3%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we find it interesting that AuMake is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On AuMake's P/S

AuMake's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

We've established that AuMake currently trades on a lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. It'd be fair to assume that potential risks the company faces could be the contributing factor to the lower than expected P/S. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
