Autosports Group Limited's (ASX:ASG) dividend is being reduced from last year's payment covering the same period to A$0.08 on the 15th of November. This means the annual payment is 7.6% of the current stock price, which is above the average for the industry.

Autosports Group's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Autosports Group was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 8.8%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 68% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Autosports Group's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
Looking back, Autosports Group's dividend hasn't been particularly consistent. Due to this, we are a little bit cautious about the dividend consistency over a full economic cycle. The dividend has gone from an annual total of A$0.046 in 2017 to the most recent total annual payment of A$0.18. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 22% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. It's encouraging to see that Autosports Group has been growing its earnings per share at 40% a year over the past five years. The company doesn't have any problems growing, despite returning a lot of capital to shareholders, which is a very nice combination for a dividend stock to have.
Autosports Group Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, we think that Autosports Group could be a great option for a dividend investment, although we would have preferred if the dividend wasn't cut this year. The cut will allow the company to continue paying out the dividend without putting the balance sheet under pressure, which means that it could remain sustainable for longer. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance.
