With EPS Growth And More, CSL (ASX:CSL) Makes An Interesting Case
The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. Sometimes these stories can cloud the minds of investors, leading them to invest with their emotions rather than on the merit of good company fundamentals. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else investors will move on and the company will wither away.
So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like CSL (ASX:CSL). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

CSL's Improving Profits
Even with very modest growth rates, a company will usually do well if it improves earnings per share (EPS) year after year. So it's no surprise that some investors are more inclined to invest in profitable businesses. It's good to see that CSL's EPS has grown from US$4.55 to US$5.46 over twelve months. That's a 20% gain; respectable growth in the broader scheme of things.
It's often helpful to take a look at earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. While we note CSL achieved similar EBIT margins to last year, revenue grew by a solid 11% to US$15b. That's a real positive.

Are CSL Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Since CSL has a market capitalisation of AU$136b, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. As a matter of fact, their holding is valued at US$74m. That shows significant buy-in, and may indicate conviction in the business strategy. Even though that's only about 0.05% of the company, it's enough money to indicate alignment between the leaders of the business and ordinary shareholders.
Should You Add CSL To Your Watchlist?
One positive for CSL is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. To add an extra spark to the fire, significant insider ownership in the company is another highlight. That combination is very appealing. So yes, we do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on.
