The Zoono Group Limited (ASX:ZNO) share price has had a bad week, falling 16%. But over the last three years the stock has shone bright like a diamond. In fact, the share price has taken off in that time, up 450%. Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. The only way to form a view of whether the current price is justified is to consider the merits of the business itself.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Zoono Group became profitable within the last three years. Given the importance of this milestone, it's not overly surprising that the share price has increased strongly.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Zoono Group the TSR over the last 3 years was 458%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Zoono Group shareholders are down 69% for the year, (even including dividends), but the broader market is up 32%. Of course the long term matters more than the short term, and even great stocks will sometimes have a poor year. Investors are up over three years, booking 77% per year, much better than the more recent returns. Sometimes when a good quality long term winner has a weak period, it's turns out to be an opportunity, but you really need to be sure that the quality is there. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
