Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By PPK Group Limited's (ASX:PPK) 31% Share Price Plunge

Unfortunately for some shareholders, the PPK Group Limited (ASX:PPK) share price has dived 31% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 37% in that time.

Since its price has dipped substantially, PPK Group may be sending buy signals at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.3x, considering almost half of all companies in the Chemicals industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 3.3x and even P/S higher than 29x aren't out of the ordinary. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does PPK Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, PPK Group has been doing very well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to dwindle, which has kept the P/S suppressed. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on PPK Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is PPK Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, PPK Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an explosive gain to the company's top line. In spite of this unbelievable short-term growth, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. Therefore, it's fair to say that revenue growth has been inconsistent recently for the company.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 5,446% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we can see why PPK Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

The Bottom Line On PPK Group's P/S

PPK Group's P/S has taken a dip along with its share price. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of PPK Group revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, it's hard to see the share price experience a reversal of fortunes anytime soon.
