Jervois Global Limited's (ASX:JRV) Shares Bounce 27% But Its Business Still Trails The Industry

Those holding Jervois Global Limited (ASX:JRV) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 27% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. But the last month did very little to improve the 68% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, Jervois Global may still be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 74.1x and even P/S higher than 467x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Jervois Global's Recent Performance Look Like?

Jervois Global could be doing better as its revenue has been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive revenue growth. Perhaps the P/S remains low as investors think the prospects of strong revenue growth aren't on the horizon. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value.

How Is Jervois Global's Revenue Growth Trending?

Jervois Global's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 45% decrease to the company's top line. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company, but investors will want to ask why it is now in decline.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should bring diminished returns, with revenue decreasing 7.6% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. That's not great when the rest of the industry is expected to grow by 29%.

In light of this, it's understandable that Jervois Global's P/S would sit below the majority of other companies. However, shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term. There's potential for the P/S to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its top-line growth.

What Does Jervois Global's P/S Mean For Investors?

Jervois Global's recent share price jump still sees fails to bring its P/S alongside the industry median. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

With revenue forecasts that are inferior to the rest of the industry, it's no surprise that Jervois Global's P/S is on the lower end of the spectrum. As other companies in the industry are forecasting revenue growth, Jervois Global's poor outlook justifies its low P/S ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
