Stock Analysis

Investors might be losing patience for EQ Resources' (ASX:EQR) increasing losses, as stock sheds 10% over the past week

While EQ Resources Limited (ASX:EQR) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 24% in the last quarter. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 400% in that time. So we don't think the recent decline in the share price means its story is a sad one. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

EQ Resources wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In the last 5 years EQ Resources saw its revenue grow at 53% per year. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Fortunately, the market has not missed this, and has pushed the share price up by 38% per year in that time. It's never too late to start following a top notch stock like EQ Resources, since some long term winners go on winning for decades. So we'd recommend you take a closer look at this one, but keep in mind the market seems optimistic.

What About The Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We've already covered EQ Resources' share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. EQ Resources hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 498% exceeds its share price return of 400%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that EQ Resources shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 25% over one year. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 43% per year, is even more impressive. The pessimistic view would be that be that the stock has its best days behind it, but on the other hand the price might simply be moderating while the business itself continues to execute. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
