Slammed 27% Element 25 Limited (ASX:E25) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch
Element 25 Limited (ASX:E25) shares have had a horrible month, losing 27% after a relatively good period beforehand. For any long-term shareholders, the last month ends a year to forget by locking in a 65% share price decline.
Following the heavy fall in price, Element 25 may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.8x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 79.2x and even P/S higher than 485x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Element 25's Recent Performance Look Like?
Element 25 has been doing a decent job lately as it's been growing revenue at a reasonable pace. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is low because investors think this good revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders may have reason to be optimistic about the future direction of the share price.
Although there are no analyst estimates available for Element 25, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow. How Is Element 25's Revenue Growth Trending?
Element 25's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling revenue, and importantly, perform much worse than the industry.
If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 4.4%. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, even though the last 12 months were fairly tame in comparison. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a tremendous job of growing revenue over that time.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 30% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it odd that Element 25 is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What Does Element 25's P/S Mean For Investors?
Having almost fallen off a cliff, Element 25's share price has pulled its P/S way down as well. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Element 25 revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't boosting its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Element 25 (of which 1 is a bit concerning!) you should know about.
