Not Many Are Piling Into CuFe Ltd (ASX:CUF) Stock Yet As It Plummets 38%

Published
ASX:CUF

The CuFe Ltd (ASX:CUF) share price has fared very poorly over the last month, falling by a substantial 38%. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 47% in that time.

After such a large drop in price, CuFe may be sending very bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, since almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 69.8x and even P/S higher than 455x are not unusual. However, the P/S might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

How Has CuFe Performed Recently?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, CuFe has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong revenue performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for CuFe, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For CuFe?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as CuFe's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 72% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, aided by its incredible short-term performance. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing that recent medium-term revenue trajectory with the industry's one-year growth forecast of 43% shows it's noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's peculiar that CuFe's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

What Does CuFe's P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in CuFe have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

We're very surprised to see CuFe currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see robust revenue growth that outpaces the industry, we presume that there are notable underlying risks to the company's future performance, which is exerting downward pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.

It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with CuFe (at least 2 which make us uncomfortable), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
