We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Brickworks Limited (ASX:BKW).

What Is Insider Buying?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

Brickworks Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when MD & Executive Director Lindsay Partridge bought AU$915k worth of shares at a price of AU$16.92 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to buy, even at a higher price than the current share price (being AU$16.03). While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company's future. To us, it's very important to consider the price insiders pay for shares. Generally speaking, it catches our eye when insiders have purchased shares at above current prices, as it suggests they believed the shares were worth buying, even at a higher price. Notably Lindsay Partridge was also the biggest seller.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid AU$1.9m for 115k shares. But insiders sold 82000 shares worth AU$1.4m. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Brickworks insiders. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year. Insider Ownership

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. Insiders own 4.1% of Brickworks shares, worth about AU$97m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
