Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Austral Gold Limited's (ASX:AGD) 27% Share Price Plunge

Austral Gold Limited (ASX:AGD) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 27% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 46% share price drop.

Following the heavy fall in price, Austral Gold may look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x, considering almost half of all companies in the Metals and Mining industry in Australia have P/S ratios greater than 74.1x and even P/S higher than 467x aren't out of the ordinary. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

What Does Austral Gold's Recent Performance Look Like?

For example, consider that Austral Gold's financial performance has been poor lately as its revenue has been in decline. Perhaps the market believes the recent revenue performance isn't good enough to keep up the industry, causing the P/S ratio to suffer. Those who are bullish on Austral Gold will be hoping that this isn't the case so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

Is There Any Revenue Growth Forecasted For Austral Gold?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as depressed as Austral Gold's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry decidedly.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 4.0% decrease to the company's top line. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 46% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 29% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this in mind, we understand why Austral Gold's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What Does Austral Gold's P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in Austral Gold have plummeted and its P/S has followed suit. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Austral Gold revealed its shrinking revenue over the medium-term is contributing to its low P/S, given the industry is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Given the current circumstances, it seems unlikely that the share price will experience any significant movement in either direction in the near future if recent medium-term revenue trends persist.
