While SelfWealth Limited (ASX:SWF) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 19% in the last quarter. In contrast, the return over three years has been impressive. In three years the stock price has launched 262% higher: a great result. To some, the recent share price pullback wouldn't be surprising after such a good run. If the business can perform well for years to come, then the recent drop could be an opportunity.

Given that SelfWealth didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

SelfWealth's revenue trended up 92% each year over three years. That's well above most pre-profit companies. Meanwhile, the share price performance has been pretty solid at 54% compound over three years. But it does seem like the market is paying attention to strong revenue growth. That's not to say we think the share price is too high. In fact, it might be worth keeping an eye on this one.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between SelfWealth's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. We note that SelfWealth's TSR, at 266% is higher than its share price return of 262%. When you consider it hasn't been paying a dividend, this data suggests shareholders have benefitted from a spin-off, or had the opportunity to acquire attractively priced shares in a discounted capital raising.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that SelfWealth shareholders have gained 200% (in total) over the last year. That's better than the annualized TSR of 54% over the last three years. The improving returns to shareholders suggests the stock is becoming more popular with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
