Investing in Washington H. Soul Pattinson (ASX:SOL) five years ago would have delivered you a 132% gain
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. One great example is Washington H. Soul Pattinson and Company Limited (ASX:SOL) which saw its share price drive 104% higher over five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 12% gain in the last three months.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.
There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the five years of share price growth, Washington H. Soul Pattinson moved from a loss to profitability. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.
You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).
It's probably worth noting we've seen significant insider buying in the last quarter, which we consider a positive. On the other hand, we think the revenue and earnings trends are much more meaningful measures of the business. This free interactive report on Washington H. Soul Pattinson's earnings, revenue and cash flow is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Washington H. Soul Pattinson the TSR over the last 5 years was 132%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Washington H. Soul Pattinson shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 17% over the last year. That's including the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 18% per year, is even more impressive. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance.
