The excitement of investing in a company that can reverse its fortunes is a big draw for some speculators, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can manage to find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses. A loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the inflow of external capital may dry up.
In contrast to all that, many investors prefer to focus on companies like HUB24 (ASX:HUB), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.
HUB24's Improving Profits
In the last three years HUB24's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. HUB24's EPS skyrocketed from AU$0.55 to AU$0.73, in just one year; a result that's bound to bring a smile to shareholders. That's a commendable gain of 33%.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. HUB24 maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 23% to AU$366m. That's a real positive.

Investors will appreciate management having this amount of skin in the game as it shows their commitment to the company's future.
Should You Add HUB24 To Your Watchlist?
For growth investors, HUB24's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Further, the high level of insider ownership is impressive and suggests that the management appreciates the EPS growth and has faith in HUB24's continuing strength. On the balance of its merits, solid EPS growth and company insiders who are aligned with the shareholders would indicate a business that is worthy of further research. Of course, profit growth is one thing but it's even better if HUB24 is receiving high returns on equity, since that should imply it can keep growing without much need for capital.
