The fact that multiple HUB24 Limited (ASX:HUB) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.
While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At HUB24
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the MD & Executive Director, Andrew Alcock, sold AU$45m worth of shares at a price of AU$107 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at around the current price of AU$104. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. We note that this sale took place at around the current price, so it isn't a major concern, though it's hardly a good sign.
Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid AU$250k for 3.80k shares. But they sold 532.98k shares for AU$55m. In total, HUB24 insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. Insiders At HUB24 Have Sold Stock Recently
The last three months saw significant insider selling at HUB24. In total, insiders dumped AU$47m worth of shares in that time, and we didn't record any purchases whatsoever. This may suggest that some insiders think that the shares are not cheap.
Does HUB24 Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that HUB24 insiders own 3.2% of the company, worth about AU$269m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
So What Do The HUB24 Insider Transactions Indicate?
Insiders haven't bought HUB24 stock in the last three months, but there was some selling. And our longer term analysis of insider transactions didn't bring confidence, either. But it is good to see that HUB24 is growing earnings. The company boasts high insider ownership, but we're a little hesitant, given the history of share sales. In addition to knowing about insider transactions going on, it's beneficial to identify the risks facing HUB24.
