Many HUB24 Limited (ASX:HUB) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. Knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more helpful when evaluating insider transactions, as insider selling can have various explanations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.
HUB24 Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the MD & Executive Director, Andrew Alcock, for AU$13m worth of shares, at about AU$67.00 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of AU$82.91. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 18% of Andrew Alcock's holding.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 4.80k shares for AU$305k. But insiders sold 324.20k shares worth AU$18m. Over the last year we saw more insider selling of HUB24 shares, than buying. Does HUB24 Boast High Insider Ownership?
Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It's great to see that HUB24 insiders own 4.1% of the company, worth about AU$273m. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.

So What Does This Data Suggest About HUB24 Insiders?
It is good to see recent purchasing. However, the longer term transactions are not so encouraging. Overall, we'd prefer see a more sustained buying from directors, but with a significant insider holding and more recent purchases, HUB24 insiders are reasonably well aligned, and optimistic for the future. Of course, the future is what matters most. So if you are interested in HUB24, you should check out this free report on analyst forecasts for the company.
