Read This Before Buying SeaLink Travel Group Limited (ASX:SLK) Shares
We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in SeaLink Travel Group Limited (ASX:SLK).
What Is Insider Buying?
It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise'.

SeaLink Travel Group Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
The Non-Executive Director, Christopher Smerdon, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for AU$500k worth of shares at a price of AU$5.00 each. That means that even when the share price was below the current price of AU$6.68, an insider wanted to cash in some shares. When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. We note that the biggest single sale was only 1.5% of Christopher Smerdon's holding. Christopher Smerdon was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.
In the last twelve months insiders purchased 43.10k shares for AU$186k. But they sold 100.00k shares for AU$500k. Does SeaLink Travel Group Boast High Insider Ownership?
Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. SeaLink Travel Group insiders own 30% of the company, currently worth about AU$442m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
