Reflecting on Shine Justice's (ASX:SHJ) Share Price Returns Over The Last Five Years
Statistically speaking, long term investing is a profitable endeavour. But unfortunately, some companies simply don't succeed. For example, after five long years the Shine Justice Ltd (ASX:SHJ) share price is a whole 69% lower. That is extremely sub-optimal, to say the least. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 16% in a month.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Looking back five years, both Shine Justice's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 4.4% per year. This reduction in EPS is less than the 21% annual reduction in the share price. This implies that the market was previously too optimistic about the stock. The low P/E ratio of 6.21 further reflects this reticence.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Shine Justice, it has a TSR of -63% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Shine Justice shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 19% over one year. And that does include the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 18% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
